Gold Price Blasts to Record, Hits $1,715

The gold price soared to a new all-time high, touching $1,715.75 per ounce Monday morning. The price of gold advanced on the back of the United States being stripped of its AAA rating by S&P. The debt downgrade led to worries over the longer-term sustainability of the U.S. dollar as a reserve currency, prompting a flight to gold. Helping to amplify the trepidation among investors were fresh worries over contagion in Europe as Italian and Spanish debt came under heavy selling pressure.

In contrast to higher gold prices, stocks sank across the globe. S&P 500 stock futures fell 24.10 to 1173.70, following equity markets in Europe and Asia to the downside. WTI crude oil futures fell 4.3% to $83.15 per barrel on fresh worries over a double-dip recession in the United States. The euro-denominated gold price traded up to 1,200 for the first time ever after the European Central Bank hinted late Sunday it may be prepared to purchase the sovereign debt of Italy and Spain.

The gold price extended its year-to-date gain to 19.7%, surging over $200 in the past five weeks alone. The SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), a proxy for the gold price and the world’s largest gold ETF, advanced to $165.05 early this morning. Silver prices advanced higher alongside gold Monday morning, rallying $1.19 to $39.54 per ounce. Gold’s sister precious metal is now higher by 27.9% in 2011.

Strength in the gold price has unable to lift precious metals equities, however, as investors dump equities of any and all ilk. The AMEX Gold Bugs Index (HUI), a composite of the world’s largest gold companies, slid 3.0% on Friday – extending its loss in 2011 to 8.1%. Barrick Gold (ABX) and Goldcorp (GG), the sector’s two largest components, dropped 3.7% and 3.2%, respectively. Newmont Mining (NEM), the largest U.S. based gold producer and the only gold stock included in the S&P 500 Index, retreated 2.2%. Despite the weakness in broader market equities this morning, gold mining stocks traded in positive territory.

S&P’s downgrade and the debt ceiling debacle in Washington have certainly contributed to the record-setting run in the gold price. However, this is only half the story. A series of disappointing U.S. economic data has led to concerns over a new recession and to prognostications that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates near zero as far as the eye can see.

Late last week, Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist at Goldman Sachs, lowered the firm’s GDP estimates in 2011 to 1.7% from 1.8% and to 2.1% from 3.0% in 2012. Hatzius also forecasted that the unemployment rate will rise to 9.25% by the end of 2012, and said there is a one-in-three likelihood of a renewed U.S. recession.

In a note to clients, the Goldman economist wrote that “Even our new forecast is subject to meaningful downside risk. We now see a one-in-three risk of renewed recession, mostly concentrated in the next 6-9 months. There are three specific issues that concern us. First, a worsening of the European financial crisis, and a failure of European policymakers to respond adequately, could lead to a further tightening of financial conditions and credit availability, which would worsen the economic outlook globally. Second, our forecast assumes that the payroll tax cut—currently scheduled to expire at the end of 2011—is extended for another year, but if that failed to happen the fiscal drag in early 2012 would increase significantly. Third, increases in the US unemployment rate have historically had a tendency to feed on themselves, and this could happen again.”

While Hatzius did not specifically discuss the gold price, the implications of the firm’s revised economic outlook are supportive of higher gold prices. Although the firm did not suggest that a third round of quantitative easing is a certainty, it is clear that the odds of an eventual restart of the Fed’s quantitative easing campaign have increased substantially. Furthermore, Goldman’s forecast echoes recent predictions from a host of noted investors – including Marc Faber, Jim Rogers, Eric Sprott, and many others – that Chairman Bernanke and the Federal Reserve are prepared to fire up the printing presses for as long as necessary to combat the deflationary headwinds facing the U.S. economy. As long as deflation is enemy number one of central bankers, the gold price is likely to remain well supported.

Gold prices soar to new levels as investors cash in

Gold is turning to green for an increasing numbers of investors and individuals.
With political unrest and renewed talk of another recession at home and confidence-shaking economic events occurring worldwide, more people are turning to gold as a stabilizing factor — selling it to generate funds or buying it to help allay their fears for the future.
The end result is a skyrocketing price of gold, which closed Friday at $1,648 an ounce after hitting a record high of $1,663.40 an ounce earlier in the week.
International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers, a Springfield, Ill., company, had representatives in Lafayette last week buying precious metals and other items from willing sellers.

“They say, ‘There’s no use in letting the stuff sit around.’ Usually it’s broken necklaces, mismatched earrings and rings that nobody wears,” said Kort Brashear, a company manager. “We’ve seen a fair amount. We’d like to see more.”
Last week in Lafayette, Brashear had paid to buy jewelry that contained gold. He also purchased an original Barbie doll for $900.

Chad Ramsey, a manager at RamZ’s, a Lafayette store that buys and sells items that include jewelry, coins, antiques and collectibles, said the federal debt ceiling debate that recently played out in Washington, D.C., has helped generate brisk business with buyers and sellers of gold.
“With the recent political event, it really puts thoughts in people’s minds about what the dollar is going to be doing. Some people are thinking, ‘I want to make money off this,’ and they’re storing gold and silver,” Ramsey said. “Some people are selling because they’re thinking they bought it years ago so they’ve already made a profit. They’re reinvesting in other items.”

Amid some commodities advisers’ speculation that the price of gold could blow past $1,800 an ounce, Ramsey said he can lament not accumulating more of the precious metal when the price was much lower.
“If I’d known back in the day. … I think that all gold and silver will continue to rise,” he said. “I could see $2,000 (an ounce). It wouldn’t surprise me to see $2,500. We just don’t know.”
Brashear said he agreed that the future price of gold is unpredictable. “I wish I could forecast the future When the economy keeps going bad, precious metals go up. Right now it’s just anybody’s guess.”
International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers evaluated and purchased items brought to the Best Western Lafayette Executive Plaza and Conference Center in Lafayette.
“We hope to spend at least $200,000 while we’re in town, purchasing people’s old coin collections, vintage bank notes and scrap gold, silver and diamonds,” said company spokesman Ron Smith. “Just a small handful of gold can add up to hundreds of dollars very quickly.”

Can Physics Explain Mysteries of Crop Circles?

Science and UFOs, as a rule, generally don't go together.

UFOs and crop circles, however, go together like the Illuminati and the dark side of the moon. Crop circles and science? Again, not so much. But that doesn't mean the ever-increasing sophistication of corn circlework isn't beyond impressing top physicists.

In this month's edition of Physics World, Richard Taylor, director of the Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon, claims every summer brings with it more mystery as to how the produce-punishing pranksters ply their trade.

"Crop-circle artists are not going to give up their secrets easily," Taylor wrote.

"This summer, unknown artists will venture into the countryside close to your homes and carry out their craft, safe in the knowledge that they are continuing the legacy of the most science-oriented art movement in history."

While that might be a bit of a blow for those think there's a better place out there, Taylor says the technology behind the global crop-circle phenomenon is still well-deserving of admiration.

Today's designs are more complex than ever, he says, with some featuring up to 2,000 different shapes.

The difference today is that where crop-circlers once used ropes, planks of wood and bar stools, high tech has taken over: GPS helps a lot, he says. Lasers also have their place.

But the most innovative modern technique involves using microwaves to force corn stalks to fall over and cool horizontally. One research team claims to have reproduced damage inflicted on crops by using a handheld magnetron ripped from a microwave ovens and a 12V battery.

The microwave technique could explain the speed and efficiency of the artists and the incredible detail that some crop circles exhibit, Taylor says.

And another question -- why does an academic feel the need to get caught up in the world of alien landing conspiracies?

Matin Durrani, editor of Physics World, said Taylor was "merely trying to act like any good scientist -- examining the evidence for the design and construction of crop circles without getting carried away by the side-show of UFOs, hoaxes and aliens."

High-tech techniques such as GPS could be behind the appearance of crop circles, says physicist Richard Taylor of the Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon.

Crop circles first started appearing in the 1970s, and over ten thousand have now been reported - mostly in the UK, although they've appeared in 25 other countries too.
Earlier crop circles tended to be simpler, and their creators have demonstrated how to do it by crushing plants with boards.
But today's crop-circle designs are more complex, with some featuring up to 2000 different shapes. Mathematical analysis has revealed the use of construction lines, invisible to the eye, that are used to design the patterns.
"Crop-circle artists are not going to give up their secrets easily," says Taylor.
"This summer, unknown artists will venture into the countryside close to your homes and carry out their craft, safe in the knowledge that they are continuing the legacy of the most science-oriented art movement in history."
And, according to Taylor, these artists may well be using the Global Positioning System (GPS) as well as lasers and microwaves to create their patterns, dispensing with the traditional rope and planks of wood.

Non-Friable Asbestos Removal

Non friable asbestos refers to products which exceed one-percent asbestos content and cannot be pulverized by hand. Products which are not damaged can be removed without releasing dangerous asbestos fibers. Asbestos is contained in plaster, plumbing, wiring, floor tiles, heating ducts and wall and ceiling insulation. It is also used in ceiling treatments and roof shingles. Asbestos fibers are toxic and can have highly debilitating effects on health. Asbestos is no longer allowed in materials such as flooring felt, roll board or specialty, corrugated and commercial paper. It is also banned from being used in products that have never contained asbestos.

Anyone involved in non friable asbestos removal must adhere to the proper protocol for the removal and disposal of this material during renovation or demolition of buildings. There are two categories of non friable materials: Category I non-friable and Category II non-friable ACM (Asbestos Containing Material).
Category I non-friable ACM includes resilient floor covering, asphalt roofing materials or packing gaskets. It must exceed an asbestos content of one percent. Before demolition can take place, any product in this category that is in poor shape must be inspected and tested for friability.
Category II non-friable ACM encompasses all materials that are not listed under the Category I non-friable ACM. Category II non-friable ACM products must also have an asbestos content that exceeds one percent. In addition, when the materials are dry, they should not be subjected to being crumbled or destroyed by hand. This would include cement siding or transite board shingles. Many of these products, such as shingles and siding, are subjected to harsh elements and often become friable.

Removal procedures must be carefully planned and controlled to avoid contaminating adjoining areas. Proper non friable asbestos removal follows comprehensive safety and removal procedures spelled out by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state laws.
Workers do not have to be licensed to remove this material. However, they must handle, transport and dispose of the material in a manner that prevents it from becoming damaged, or friable, and causing asbestos fibers to dislodge. Workers are required to wear respiratory protection, hoods, disposable coveralls and disposable shoe covers. These items are not to be worn outside the designated work area and should be immediately disposed of when the job is completed. The contractor must provide the proper area for the workers to change.
If a building is being demolished, the asbestos materials must be removed before the demolition takes place if it is damaged or friable. Even if the building is being destroyed by setting an intentional fire, the asbestos-containing product must be extricated. Non-friable material is generally removed by sanding, grounding, abrading or cutting the asbestos. It must be wetted down as it is being removed.
The workers must follow specific rules when wetting the material if there is a safety concern or the possibility of causing damage to equipment. The material should be immediately placed in a 6-millimeter polyethylene bag. The bag cannot be punctured or have any protruding objects. If the bag is not durable enough, place the asbestos waste into rigid containers like fiber drums. The waste container must be properly sealed, usually with duct tape, and placed into a clean 6-millimeter polyethylene bag. Seal the second container with tape and place an asbestos warning label on the container. The waste must then be transported to the proper waste facility for disposal.

Friable Vs. Non Friable Asbestos

Asbestos was a popular ingredient in building materials for many years because of its indestructibility, insulating properties, tensile strength and low electrical conductivity. It is still used in the U.S. today, but a distinction is made between more and less dangerous asbestos-containing material (ACM). More dangerous ACM can release asbestos fibers into the air where they can be inhaled and cause illness. Less dangerous ACM generally coats or encapsulates the asbestos fibers with cement, plastics, or asphalt so that they are not easily released into the air. The more dangerous ACMs have been banned or voluntarily replaced to a large degree, while some of the less dangerous ones remain in use.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made this distinction when first regulating ACM under the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) in 1973. They called the more dangerous type of ACM "friable." Friable asbestos-containing materials were officially defined as those materials containing more than 1% asbestos which could be crumbled, pulverized or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry, using methods specified in the NESHAP rules.
The EPA called "non-friable" the generally less dangerous form of ACM, not very likely to release asbestos fibers into the air. A non-friable ACM is a material containing more than 1% asbestos but not able to be crumbled, pulverized or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry, using the same methods (1).
The terms "friable" and "non-friable" are not necessarily meant to pertain to a particular material for its entire lifetime. Some materials will always be friable by their nature, particularly the lightweight uncapsulated ACM once used for insulation. But the EPA has determined that otherwise non-friable ACM can become friable if it is damaged or worn enough (2). Cutting or grinding or sanding a non-friable material like asbestos-containing cement, as the homeowner might do during renovation, for instance, would create large amounts of dust which might contain significant amounts of asbestos fibers which had been freed from their binding material by the pressure exerted by power tools.

NESHAP therefore regulates both friable ACM and non-friable ACM which is likely to become friable when acted upon during demolition or renovation, or when degraded during its natural lifetime by the weather or other forces it might be exposed to. Non friable asbestos ACM may be either Category I or Category II, which is generally a division reflecting its probability of becoming friable over time, and its relative danger after being disturbed or degraded. Federal laws defined by NESHAP as well as the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules for asbestos workers—plus more stringent laws on state and local levels for handling, transporting and disposal—will differ depending on whether the ACM in question is friable or non-friable Category I or Category II, and whether it shows damage or is likely to be damaged by the kind of action to be taken (3).

Non-friable asbestos:
There are two types of asbestos- friable and non friable.Friable means which can be crushed into powder by hand pressure while non friable canot be crushed by hand.Non-friable asbestos is hard to break into smaller pieces.
Non friable asbestos is less dangerous than friable asbestos, however it should still be treated with caution and disposed of properly.

Category II Non-Friable: These materials are more likely to be made friable, as they are not resistant to weathering or crushing forces.
Handling of non friable asbestos:
Never break up or smash an asbestos product this will release asbestos.
For example :If you are removing asbestos tiles, you can do so safely if the tiles can be pulled without shattering, pulverizing or crumbling.
You shouldnot sand, grind, saw, chip, pound or use hand or power tools on the VATs so that it creates dust. You must remove the tiles intact.

Your 'Antiques Roadshow' fantasy - those old cups = $1 million

On Sunday, appraisers from the PBS hit show "Antiques Roadshow" recorded the highest-value collection ever appraised in the show's 15-year history.

The big ticket item: five Chinese carved rhinoceros-horn cups dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, which are worth between $1 and $1.5 million. An Oklahoma resident bought the cups inexpensively in the 1970s, according to a press release from the show's producers. The reason the value of the cups is so high is due to China's growing demand for Chinese antiquities.
The episode will air as part of "Antiques Roadshow's" 16th season in 2012. The name of the lucky owner of the cups was not released.

The husband, Jeff Green, 32, an American who lives in Arizona. Jeff's wife makes her husband died and suffered greatly. To heal the pain, Jeff did something really unusual. Lucy, the name of his wife who died, had heart disease who died at the age of 29 makes. Last sentence, "We will meet again in heaven." But the sentence was not enough to convince Jeff.

Before funeral, Jeff decided he could not let Lucy go away. Courtesy of the government, allowed to bring Jeff in his wife's corpse to the house. Because Lucy during her lifetime love of humor, Jeff thought his wife would not mind if made in a coffee table. Jeff then ordered a special glass table who can stop the decay process. Funny Or Die Creates Field of Dreams 2—Lockout

If you build it, they will come. But will they be able to play? With the NFL Lockout in its 114^th day, Funny Or Die (funnyordie.com) debuted “Field of Dreams 2: Lockout,” a spoof on the 1989 film “Field of Dreams.”

The spoof made its debut Wednesday morning on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” Remember how ESPN evp, content John Skipper told advertisers at the net’s upfront that there was enough programming to keep fans interested if play is interrupted? Perhaps ESPN plans on having Funny Or Die fill its Monday Night Football schedule if the lockout doesn’t end soon.

In this version there is something in it for football fans as well as tweens: “Twilight” series star Taylor Lautner plays Ray Kinsella, Kevin Costner’s role in the original movie. Ray Liotta, Shoeless Joe Jackson, appears this time as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

A few NFL stars surface from the cornfields to enjoy some football, including Tony Gonzalez, Dwight Freeney, Ray Lewis, DeSean Jackson, Shawne Merriman and Antonio Cromartie. Even anchors get some play, with ESPN SportsCenter’s Steve Levy and the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen. In place of James Earl Jones is Dennis Haysbert, from Major League and the Allstate Insurance commercials.

The video, shot last week in Thousand Oaks, CA, is the biggest online production in Funny Or Die’s history.
